DuMOL

DuMOL is a Sonoma County producer founded in 1996 by Australian Andy Smith and Irishman Michael Donahue, specialising in single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley and Syrah. The name combines founders' surnames (du Mol, from Mole) and the estate's production philosophy centres on sourcing from established benchmark vineyards including Hyde Vineyard (Carneros Chardonnay), Widdoes Vineyard Ryan, Finn, Aidan, and Wildrose Estate for Pinot Noir, and Eddie's Patch for Syrah. Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay — from Larry Hyde's legendary Carneros site — is the estate's most critically acclaimed wine, earning 93–96 points and competing with the finest California Chardonnays in blind tastings. Eddie's Patch Syrah, from a cool-climate Sebastopol parcel, earns similar scores in the Northern Rhône-influenced style. DuMOL's Pinot Noirs are produced from several distinct Russian River Valley sites, each expressing the vineyard's individual character rather than a house blended style. With 531 lots averaging $65 per bottle, DuMOL trades at accessible pricing for the quality level — a reflection of relatively broad production across many cuvées and less media spotlight than Napa producers. The estate was acquired by the O'Shaughnessy family in 2014, maintaining winemaker Kerry Damskey's approach.

Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, from Larry Hyde's benchmark Carneros site, earns 93–96 points and is considered one of California's finest white wines — competing with Kistler and Peter Michael at a notably lower auction price.
Eddie's Patch Syrah from a cool Sebastopol parcel earns 93–96 points in Northern Rhône-influenced style — iron, olive, and white pepper — representing some of California's finest cool-climate Syrah.
The estate sources from multiple benchmark Russian River Valley Pinot Noir vineyards (Hyde, Widdoes/Ryan, Finn, Aidan, Wildrose) rather than blending, allowing collectors to build comparative vertical libraries.
531 lots average $65 per bottle — accessible for multiple 93–96-point wines from benchmark California vineyard sites; one of the better value propositions among premium Russian River Valley producers.

In the Glass

DuMOL's portfolio spans cool Sonoma Coast varieties at high quality. Hyde Chardonnay shows lemon cream, hazelnut, and mineral precision with balanced oak. Russian River Pinot Noirs deliver concentrated red cherry, raspberry, and forest floor with firm acidity from cool-climate sites. Eddie's Patch Syrah is the most Northern Rhône-like: black olive, iron, white pepper, and violet. All wines prioritise precision over opulence.
