Tablas Creek

Tablas Creek Vineyard was established in 1987 by Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands and the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel, in the limestone-rich hills of Paso Robles' Adelaida District. The joint venture imported certified cuttings of the major Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties directly from Beaucastel—including Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah, Counoise, Roussanne, Viognier, and Marsanne—establishing the first California estate to farm these varieties from French-certified plant material after a multi-year USDA quarantine. The white Esprit de Tablas Blanc, averaging $47 across 59 lots, is the most traded wine, a blend typically dominated by Roussanne with scores in the 90–96 range from multiple critics. The red Panoplie at $65 average across 30 lots is the prestige cuvée—a Mourvèdre-dominant blend selected only in the best years. Cotes de Tablas at $31 serves as the entry tier. The portfolio average of $39 across 200 lots reflects the accessible pricing of Paso Robles Rhône varieties relative to Napa Cabernet, despite the estate's pioneering role. The maximum of $221 indicates limited upward price pressure—Tablas Creek's value proposition has always been quality-to-price ratio rather than scarcity-driven collectibility. The estate became certified biodynamic in 2017 and farms over 20 different varieties, a breadth unprecedented in California.

In the Glass

Tablas Creek's reds are Grenache and Mourvèdre-dominant, showing ripe garrigue-scented fruit—dried lavender, black olive, wild herbs—with supple tannins and warm spice consistent with Paso Robles' sun-drenched Adelaida limestone terroir. The whites, led by Roussanne, deliver lanolin, honeysuckle, white pear, and herbal notes with surprising freshness. The Panoplie adds iron-mineral complexity and greater structural density from Mourvèdre dominance. All wines carry an authenticity of Rhône variety expression rare in California.
