Pina

Querciabella is a certified organic and biodynamic estate in the Greve in Chianti commune of the Chianti Classico DOCG, established in 1974 by Giorgio Castiglioni and now run by his son Sebastiano with one of Tuscany's most committed sustainability programs. The estate is best known for two wines: Camartina, a Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon super-Tuscan blend that predates the Chianti Classico DOCG system; and Batar, an oak-fermented Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc white that is among Tuscany's most respected whites from any producer. At auction, 111 lots average $76 per bottle, anchored by Camartina in the $100–$200 range and Batar at $60–$100 for top vintages. Querciabella's biodynamic certification — achieved in 1988, among Chianti's earliest — is matched by a fully vegan winemaking approach that avoids all animal-derived fining agents. Camartina is produced from a single vineyard plot in Ruffoli where Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon are interplanted in the traditional Tuscany field-blend style. Wine Advocate has awarded 92–97 points to Camartina across multiple vintages, establishing it as a legitimate Chianti Classico super-Tuscan benchmark. The third wine, Palafreno (pure Merlot), earns 91–94 points and provides a rare Tuscan varietal Merlot expression from high-altitude biodynamic farming. Querciabella's vegan approach extends to vineyard management, using only plant-based cover crops and no animal-derived composts, making it one of the most comprehensively plant-based wine estates in any major Italian wine region.

Pina's Buckeye Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Rutherford Bench, one of Napa's most historically celebrated mesoclimates, where deep alluvial soils and warm afternoon temperatures produce the characteristic 'Rutherford dust' tannin texture.
The estate produces four distinct single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons simultaneously — Buckeye, Firehouse, D'Adamo, and Wolff — providing a rare within-producer comparison of Napa Valley terroir variation across Rutherford and adjacent zones.
Pina's family direct-to-consumer distribution model keeps the wines below national retailer thresholds, ensuring consistent mailing-list demand and modest but stable auction supply from original buyers who have outgrown their allocations.
Average auction price of $68 per bottle across 110 lots positions Pina as one of the most accessible named-vineyard Rutherford Cabernet producers in the database, trading at a 60–70% discount to more famous Rutherford Bench peers.

In the Glass

Rutherford Bench Cabernet Sauvignon anchors the range: cassis, chocolate, and the dusty, earthy tannin texture characteristic of the Bench's deep alluvial soils. Firehouse and D'Adamo lots vary by site — warmer valley-floor richness vs. the cooler, more structured character of higher-elevation blocks. French oak aging (18 months, 50–70% new) adds cedar, vanilla, and spice. All wines are full-bodied, ripe, and polished, accessible at 5–8 years with potential for 15+ year aging.
