Peter Michael Winery was established in 1982 by Sir Peter Michael, a British technology entrepreneur, on Knights Valley land straddling the Sonoma-Napa county line at elevations between 1,200 and 2,200 feet on the slopes of Mount St. Helena. The estate's volcanic soils, fog influence from the Pacific, and significant diurnal temperature range create conditions suited to elegant, age-worthy Chardonnay and Bordeaux-style reds. Winemaking has emphasized a French-influenced approach from the outset — Les Pavots was the first California red to receive a French appellation-style name — and the wines consistently occupy the premium tier of Sonoma's secondary market. Les Pavots, the flagship Bordeaux blend, leads at $171 average across 547 lots with 2014 as the top vintage. L'Esprit des Pavots, the second wine, averages $87 across 263 lots. The Chardonnay program across La Carriere ($91/196 lots), Mon Plaisir ($114/189 lots), Belle Cote ($83/147 lots), and other vineyard designates demonstrates the estate's commitment to site-specific white wine expression. The winery operates entirely within a mailing list model, limiting allocation to existing customers and creating structured secondary market scarcity. Paul Hobbs served as founding winemaker and shaped the initial style. Nicolas Morlet has directed winemaking since 2005, providing two decades of stylistic continuity that collectors cite as a key quality signal for the program.
