About Veneto
The Veneto is a highly productive wine region in north-east Italy and the largest DOC producer of the Tre Venezie, the three regions named after the Republic of Venice. It makes more white than red under DOC, including Prosecco, from the Glera grape, and Soave, from Garganega. The Alps shelter it from northern cold, and their cooler foothills suit white grapes. The warmer plains, valleys and Lake Garda area make the reds. Native Corvina and Rondinella are the basis of Valpolicella, Bardolino and Amarone, a dense wine from air-dried grapes, whose sweet counterpart is Recioto. Growers have also planted Cabernets, Chardonnay and Pinots.
