Maculan
Maculan is one of the Veneto's most versatile and historically significant estates, based in Breganze in the Veneto foothills. Founded by Fausto Maculan, the estate became famous in the 1970s and 1980s for two distinct achievements: first, for introducing serious Bordeaux-inspired red wine to the Veneto with Fratta (a Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend), and second, for pioneering noble-rot dessert wines, particularly the extraordinary Acininobili (from botrytized Vespaiola) and Torcolato. Fratta is the estate's flagship red, aged in French barriques and modeled explicitly on Médoc-style Cabernet-Merlot blends. At auction, prices range from $10 to $431, with Fratta and Acininobili commanding the premium end. The average of $66 per bottle across 124 lots reflects the accessible pricing of Breganze DOC wines relative to their quality. Acininobili, the botrytized Vespaiola, is one of northern Italy's finest sweet wines and commands prices comparable to good Sauternes when it appears at auction. Maculan's daughter Mireia now co-manages the estate.

In the Glass
Maculan's portfolio spans dramatically: Fratta is a structured, cedar-and-cassis Bordeaux-style blend with Veneto earthiness. Acininobili is rich, golden, and intensely honeyed — marmalade, saffron, and dried apricot with remarkable freshness. Torcolato is medium-sweet and nutty. The Cabernet IGT is more straightforward — dark berry and herbal Veneto character.
