Alsace

France · Wine Auction Prices

Alsace occupies a narrow strip of land between the Vosges mountains to the west and the Rhine to the east, producing some of France's most distinctive and age-worthy white wines. The Vosges act as a formidable rain shadow, making Alsace one of the driest wine regions in France with a continental climate of warm summers and cold winters. This combination of warmth and low rainfall allows grapes to ripen slowly to full phenolic maturity while retaining pronounced acidity. Alsace Grand Cru encompasses 51 named sites of exceptional terroir, covering roughly 4% of the region's total plantings; the Grand Cru classification permits only the four noble varieties — Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and Trimbach define the twin poles of Alsace style: Zind-Humbrecht pursues maximum terroir expression through low yields and late harvesting, producing some of France's most concentrated white wines; Trimbach's Clos Sainte-Hune Riesling, sourced from a monopole within the Rosacker Grand Cru, is among the most sought-after Alsace Rieslings at auction. The sweetest tier — Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles — requires botrytised or late-harvested fruit and represents the apex of Alsace auction pricing. Varietally distinct, architecturally complex and built for the cellar, great Alsace white wines remain undervalued relative to their quality.

Alsace
01

The Vosges mountains create one of France's driest wine regions, with Colmar recording less annual rainfall than Marseille in some years — the continental climate produces full-ripeness while preserving acidity.

02

Alsace Grand Cru encompasses 51 named sites; Trimbach's Clos Sainte-Hune Riesling — from a 1.67-hectare monopole within Rosacker Grand Cru — is among the most consistently prized Alsace wines at auction.

03

Sélection de Grains Nobles (SGN) requires hand-selecting individual botrytised berries; Zind-Humbrecht's SGN bottlings regularly achieve auction prices exceeding $1,000 per bottle.

04

Alsace is the only French AOC to label wines primarily by grape variety rather than village name — a legacy of the region's German cultural history and a key reason Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat are recognised by consumers worldwide.

In the Glass

Alsace Riesling delivers lime zest, white flower and pronounced mineral drive — drier in style than German Riesling, with the Clos Sainte-Hune benchmark showing remarkable longevity. Gewurztraminer is opulent and spice-laden, with lychee, rose petal and ginger; at SGN level it takes on extraordinary intensity. Pinot Gris bridges richness and structure with stone fruit, smoke and honey, while Grand Cru Sommerberg and Brand bottlings show particular precision.
