Masi

Masi Agricola is the Valpolicella zone's largest and most internationally recognized family estate, managed by the Boscaini family since the 1960s with connections to the Serego Alighieri family (descendants of Dante Alighieri). The estate pioneered and refined the double-fermentation technique that distinguishes Amarone — a process they branded Tecnica Masi — involving re-fermentation of fresh wine on the partially dried skins of Recioto grapes. At auction, 132 lots have traded at an average of $84, ranging from $23 to $984. Costasera (the accessible Amarone tier) leads at 44 lots averaging $54; Campolongo di Torbe (single-vineyard Amarone from the highest-altitude Masi cru) averages $120 across 20 lots; the standard Amarone Classico averages $177 across 9 lots. The $984 ceiling reflects large-format Mazzano — Masi's other single-vineyard Amarone — from benchmark years like 1997, 2001, 2007, or 2012. Mazzano regularly receives 95-98-point scores.

Campolongo di Torbe single-vineyard Amarone, from Masi's highest-altitude cru, averages $120 at auction across 20 lots; Mazzano (the eastern single-vineyard apex) regularly scores 95-98 points.
Masi pioneered and branded the Tecnica Masi double-fermentation process for Amarone — re-fermenting fresh wine on partially dried Recioto skins — which the estate helped codify as the appellation's standard.
The $984 auction ceiling represents Mazzano in large format from landmark Amarone vintages; Masi's single-vineyard Amarones are among the appellation's most internationally traded wines.
As the Valpolicella zone's largest quality estate, Masi wines are widely available at retail, which limits secondary market scarcity premiums for standard tiers like Costasera.

In the Glass

Valpolicella and Amarone della Valpolicella: Costasera shows dried cherry, chocolate, spice, and characteristic Amarone raisined-fruit concentration with medium structure. Campolongo di Torbe adds more complexity, darker fruit density, and a firm tannic backbone from altitude. Mazzano delivers extraordinary power — prune, tar, espresso, dried violets, and massive tannins requiring 15+ years of aging. The house style uses the double-fermentation technique to add richness and depth to Corvina's naturally lighter character.
