Azelia

Azelia is a respected traditional Barolo estate in Castiglione Falletto, farmed by Luigi Scavino and his daughter Silvia across approximately 17 hectares of estate vineyards including the prestigious Bricco Fiasco, San Rocco, and Margheria crus. Luigi Scavino was a pioneer of Barolo's qualitative revival in the early 1980s, among the first to reduce yields and improve cellar hygiene before the broader modernist movement took hold. Despite early experiments with barriques, the estate has returned to a predominantly traditional approach: large Slavonian oak botti and extended maceration that preserves Nebbiolo's aromatic character and structural backbone. Bricco Fiasco, a high-altitude parcel on the limestone ridge of Castiglione Falletto adjacent to the Rocche, produces the estate's most concentrated and age-worthy Barolo; San Rocco and Margheria provide different textural and aromatic expressions of the commune's calcareous clay soils. Parker regularly scores the single-vineyard Barolos at 92–95 points in strong vintages including 2010, 2013, and 2016. With 544 lots averaging $81 per bottle, Azelia represents exceptional value for traditional Castiglione Falletto Barolo — priced well below celebrity neighbours Cavallotto and Vietti while offering genuine terroir expression and three separately vinified named cru bottlings from the same commune.

Luigi Scavino was among Barolo's early quality reformers in the 1980s, reducing yields and improving cellar practices before the modernist movement formally emerged — giving Azelia a claim as a proto-modernist traditional estate.
Bricco Fiasco, from a high-altitude parcel adjacent to Castiglione Falletto's Rocche, earns 93–95 points in top vintages and is the estate's most concentrated and sought-after auction lot.
The estate farms 17 hectares across three single-vineyard sites in Castiglione Falletto, each separately vinified: Bricco Fiasco, San Rocco, and Margheria — a complete survey of the commune's best calcareous clay parcels.
544 lots average $81 per bottle — outstanding value for Castiglione Falletto Barolo from three named crus, trading at approximately one-third the price of Vietti or Cavallotto from the same commune and similar vineyard quality.

In the Glass

Castiglione Falletto Nebbiolo from calcareous clay: Azelia Barolo shows dried cherry, rose hip, iron, leather, and liquorice on a firm traditional tannin structure. Bricco Fiasco is the most powerful and mineral; San Rocco the most elegant and floral; Margheria the most immediately accessible. The return to large botti aging has given the wines better integration and aromatic precision. All reward 12–25 years of cellaring.
