Castello Banfi was established in 1978 when the Mariani family — American importers — acquired 7,100 acres in Montalcino, becoming the single largest landowner in the appellation and a transformative force in modernizing Brunello production. The estate farms approximately 850 hectares under vine on the Sant'Angelo in Colle ridge on Montalcino's southwestern flank, with calcareous clay soils suited to ripe, structured Sangiovese Grosso. The winery's collaboration with oenologist Ezio Rivella drove modernization in the late 1970s–1990s, and Banfi was implicated in the 2008 'Brunellogate' scandal involving alleged unauthorized blending with Merlot and Syrah, though no criminal charges ultimately resulted. The Brunello Riserva from top vintages — 1997, 2004, 2010, and 2012 — achieves $60–$120 at auction, with the 2004 Poggio all'Oro earning 97 points from Wine Spectator. Super-Tuscan bottlings Cum Laude and Belnero round out the portfolio. At auction, 118 lots average $74 per bottle, reflecting the house's volume positioning: everyday Chianti Classico and Rosso di Montalcino lots trade under $50, while the Brunello Riserva represents the best secondary-market value and the clearest expression of the southwestern Montalcino terroir's warm, structured character. The estate also produces Moscadello di Montalcino and Brachetto in smaller quantities, reflecting the Mariani family's broader interest in Montalcino's indigenous variety diversity beyond the Sangiovese-focused prestige category.
