Bellevue Mondotte

Château Bellevue Mondotte is a micro-estate in Saint-Émilion created by Stéphane von Neipperg — the same family behind Canon-la-Gaffelière and Clos de l'Oratoire — from a 4.5-hectare parcel on iron-rich clay-limestone adjacent to Tertre Roteboeuf. The wine became a garage wine archetype after its debut vintage in 2001, earning scores consistently above 95 points from Robert Parker in its best years and rapidly attracting attention from Right Bank collectors worldwide. Production of approximately 6,000 bottles annually — old Merlot and Cabernet Franc — keeps supply tightly constrained relative to demand. The 2005 vintage is the defining benchmark, consistently achieving the highest auction prices across 276 total lots averaging $171 with a ceiling of $1,434. The range extends down to $30 for lesser years, indicating strong vintage sensitivity. Von Neipperg's winemaking philosophy emphasises parcel-level selection and precise extraction; the result is a wine with deceptive density and remarkable ageing trajectory for its small-estate scale. Among garage wines from the Right Bank, Bellevue Mondotte is among the few to maintain consistent collector demand for more than two decades. The iron-rich soil imparts a savoury mineral tension that prevents the wine from tipping into pure fruit opulence, distinguishing it from softer Saint-Émilion estates on sandier terroirs.

In the Glass

Bellevue Mondotte is dense, opulent Saint-Émilion Merlot — dark plum, black cherry, mocha, and truffle — with a velvety texture from concentrated fruit and meticulous selection. Cabernet Franc adds lifted violet aromatics and structural tension. The iron-rich clay-limestone terroir gives a savoury mineral edge that prevents the wine from tipping into pure fruit-bomb territory. Demands 8–15 years to fully integrate.
