Bersano

Bersano is a large traditional Piedmontese winery based in Nizza Monferrato, with one of Italy's largest private wine museums and a history dating to the early 20th century. The estate farms approximately 200 hectares across Piedmont, including holdings in Barolo, Barbera d'Asti, and Moscato d'Asti, making it one of the region's larger single-family operations. Barolo is the primary auction focus: the estate farms parcels in Serralunga d'Alba and La Morra zones, producing a range of Barolo and Barolo Riserva under a traditional philosophy — long maceration, large Slavonian oak aging, and minimal technological intervention. The flagship Riserva Speciale Cremosina and Riserva bottlings are aged for extended periods (minimum 5 years for the Riserva Speciale), producing Barolo of considerable tannic grip and longevity. At auction, 113 lots average $96 per bottle, with Riserva and Riserva Speciale driving the upper range at $100–$200 for top vintages. Bersano's wines are less sought after than single-vineyard Barolo from micro-producers like Giacosa or Mascarello, but they represent accessible, traditionally styled Nebbiolo from a reputable estate with verifiable long-term cellaring history and genuinely old vine material in the Serralunga zone. The estate's large museum collection documents two centuries of Piedmontese winemaking history through artifacts, labels, and equipment, providing historical context for the traditional production methods still practiced at the winery today.

Bersano operates one of Italy's largest private wine museums at its Nizza Monferrato headquarters, housing thousands of historic winemaking artifacts and documents spanning over a century of Piedmontese wine history.
The Riserva Speciale Cremosina is aged a minimum of five years before release — well beyond the DOCG minimum — in large Slavonian oak botti, producing Barolo with firm tannic structure and the capacity for 20–30 year development.
The estate farms approximately 200 hectares across Piedmont, including parcels in both Serralunga d'Alba and La Morra zones, covering two of Barolo's stylistically contrasting terroirs: iron-rich Helvetian soils vs. calcareous Tortonian clay.
Average auction price of $96 per bottle across 113 lots positions Bersano as accessible traditional Barolo at secondary market, with Riserva releases trading at $100–$200 — a fraction of the premium commanded by single-vineyard micro-producers.

In the Glass

Traditional large-production Barolo: tar, dried roses, licorice, and red fruit on the nose, with firm Nebbiolo tannins, medium-high acidity, and considerable structure in youth. The Riserva Speciale Cremosina adds tobacco, dried fig, and leather from extended large-oak aging. The Antico Podere blends show softer texture. All wines are built for age — the traditional approach produces wines that need 10–20 years to fully integrate their structural components.
