Bonaccorsi

Bonaccorsi Wine Company was founded by Michael Bonaccorsi, a Master Sommelier who turned to winemaking in Santa Barbara County in the early 2000s. The label focused on vineyard-designate Syrah and Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley, sourcing from Larner, Star Lane, Bien Nacido, and other benchmark Santa Barbara vineyards. Michael Bonaccorsi died in 2004 at the age of 37, making Bonaccorsi a small-production label with a finite back catalogue of four vintages from 2001-2004 — auction is virtually the only source. At auction, 144 lots have traded at an average of $44, ranging from $1 to $244. Syrah from Larner Vineyard averages $31 across 19 lots; Star Lane Syrah averages $66 per bottle across 12 lots, reflecting the higher regard for that warmer-climate fruit source. J.L. Bonaccorsi Pinot Noir represents his more structured Pinot work. The $244 ceiling likely reflects highly scored Syrabs from 2003 and 2004. Bonaccorsi's short tenure produced wines admired by Robert Parker, who scored several bottlings in the early 90s during the California Syrah boom.

Michael Bonaccorsi, a Master Sommelier, produced only four vintages (2001-2004) before his death in 2004 at age 37, making all Bonaccorsi wines effectively finite in supply.
Star Lane Vineyard Syrah averages $66 per bottle at auction — double the Larner Syrah — reflecting critic preference for the warmer-site density of Star Lane fruit.
144 lots have traded at an average of $44; the $244 ceiling reflects rare high-scoring Syrabs from benchmark years like 2003, which saw peak critical attention for California Syrah.
Parker and other critics scored Bonaccorsi Syrabs in the 90-93 range during the early 2000s California Syrah vogue, establishing a collector base that sustains auction prices today.

In the Glass

Santa Barbara Syrah with a Northern Rhone influence: black olive, smoked meat, cracked pepper, and wild blackberry from cool Sta. Rita Hills sites; richer, darker plum and tar notes from Star Lane's warmer soils. Pinot Noir shows red cherry, dried rose, and forest floor. Productions were minimalist — low SO2, native yeasts — resulting in wines of idiosyncratic character and some bottle variation.
