Calera

Calera Wine Company was a pioneering California Pinot Noir estate established by Josh Jensen in 1975 on Mount Harlan in San Benito County, a remote limestone-rich site 2,200 feet above sea level that Jensen specifically chose for its geological resemblance to Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. The estate produces five single-vineyard Pinot Noirs — Jensen, Selleck, Mills, de Villiers, and Reed — each named for the specific limestone parcel from which it is sourced, plus a Viognier and a blended Mount Harlan Pinot. The Jensen vineyard, the oldest and largest at approximately 14 acres, consistently earns 92–96 points and commands the highest auction prices in the portfolio. The estate's remote location, low yields on stony limestone soils, and Jensen's Burgundian inspiration created wines of an uncommon minerality and austerity for California in the 1980s and 1990s. Parker scored the 1987 Jensen 97 points, a landmark recognition of California Pinot Noir's potential. With 625 lots averaging $104 per bottle, Calera occupies a peculiar position: historically significant but trading at prices that arguably undervalue the estate's role in establishing California Pinot as a world-class category. Jensen sold the estate in 2017 to Duckhorn Wine Company; post-acquisition vintages have maintained quality continuity. The de Villiers and Selleck parcels, both under 5 acres, command premium prices for their genuine scarcity.

Parker scored the 1987 Jensen vineyard Pinot Noir 97 points — one of the highest scores given to any California Pinot Noir in the 1980s and a milestone in establishing the variety's California potential.
Calera's five single-vineyard Pinot Noirs are grown at 2,200 feet elevation on San Benito County limestone soils that Josh Jensen specifically chose for their geological similarity to Burgundy's Côte de Nuits.
The Selleck and de Villiers parcels each cover fewer than 5 acres, producing under 200 cases annually — genuine scarcity that drives premium prices despite the estate's accessible overall average.
625 lots average $104 per bottle — historically undervalued given Calera's foundational role in California Pinot Noir; Jensen and Selleck lots from the late 1980s and 1990s represent the strongest secondary market interest.

In the Glass

Mount Harlan limestone-driven Pinot Noir: the Calera style is defined by austere red cherry, cranberry, and dried rose with a pronounced mineral, almost saline quality from the limestone substrate — more Burgundian in architecture than typical California Pinot. Tannins are firm and fine-grained; acidity is notably high for California. Jensen is the most complex and structured; de Villiers the most elegant; Mills the most approachable.
