Caparzo

Tenuta Caparzo is one of Montalcino's pioneer modern estates, established in 1970 by a group of Milanese investors who saw potential in Brunello before the appellation gained international recognition. For decades Caparzo was among the appellation's production leaders, alongside Biondi-Santi and Col d'Orcia, and the estate's commitment to the original Brunello style — 100% Sangiovese Grosso, extended maceration, large oak aging — defined the appellation's modern era. The estate farms over 60 hectares across several distinct sites in Montalcino, with flagship vineyard parcels including La Casa, which produces the eponymous single-vineyard bottling. The Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino is the core offering, averaging $126 per bottle across 134 auction lots with 2016 the most traded vintage. The La Casa single-vineyard Brunello — sourced from a cooler northern exposure — averages $84 across 12 lots. Auction pricing reflects the estate's premium reputation: a ceiling of $886 for exceptional older vintages in original wooden cases, driven by interest in library bottles from landmark years such as 1990, 1997, and 2001. The estate changed ownership in 2019, passing to the Bartolomei family, which has maintained vineyard and cellar continuity. Total portfolio activity spans 292 lots averaging $122, making Caparzo one of the more actively traded Montalcino estates on the secondary market.

Caparzo was founded in 1970 by Milanese investors as one of the first commercial Brunello estates alongside Biondi-Santi and Col d'Orcia, helping to establish the appellation's initial international reputation.
The La Casa single-vineyard Brunello, sourced from a cooler north-facing site, is the estate's most distinctive bottling and has historically earned critical scores of 92–96 points; it averages $84 across 12 auction lots.
The estate changed ownership in 2019 to the Bartolomei family following nearly 50 years under the original Milanese investor group; the transition has so far maintained the estate's traditional Sangiovese-only production philosophy.
Auction records show a $886 ceiling for exceptional library vintages, with the 1990, 1997, and 2001 Brunello regularly commanding premiums among the 292 total lots trading at an average of $122 per bottle.

In the Glass

Caparzo Brunello is classically structured: dried cherry and pomegranate on the nose with an underpinning of iron-rich earth, dried herbs, and worn leather that typifies Montalcino Sangiovese. Large oak aging preserves the variety's natural tannin framework — firm and grippy in youth, developing silky complexity over 10–25 years. La Casa adds a floral lift and cooler-climate spice note. The style is traditional, age-dependent, and rewards patience over immediate gratification.
