Castello Banfi

Castello Banfi, the American-owned estate established by the Mariani family in 1978 in Montalcino, is one of Brunello di Montalcino's largest producers and a significant force in modernizing the appellation's viticulture. The estate covers approximately 3,000 hectares in the southwestern sector near Castagneto dell'Abate, with 850 hectares under vine. Banfi's resources financed significant viticultural research into Sangiovese clonal selection and soil mapping in the 1980s and 1990s, directly contributing to the appellation's understanding of its own viticulture. The flagship Brunello Poggio alle Mura comes from the estate's premium amphitheater vineyard and consistently achieves the portfolio's highest scores. The Poggio Oro Riserva is released only in exceptional years. At auction, 879 lots average $99 per bottle with a ceiling of $1,230. The 2016 vintage is the top auction year. The SummuS blend and ExcelsuS provide alternative lots alongside the DOCG wines. Despite its scale, Banfi's quality wines achieve 93–97 points from major critics in strong vintages.

Banfi's 850-hectare vineyard is one of the largest single-estate plantings in all of Tuscany; the estate's scale allows substantial investment in precision viticulture, clone research, and cellar technology unavailable to smaller family producers.
The Poggio alle Mura single-vineyard Brunello is planted in a natural amphitheater with ideal south-facing exposure; it consistently outperforms the estate Brunello and achieves 95–97 points in top vintages including 2010, 2015, and 2016.
In the late 1980s Banfi undertook the most comprehensive Sangiovese Grosso clonal selection research in Montalcino history, identifying superior clones for quality and disease resistance—research that benefited the entire appellation.
Poggio Oro Riserva, produced only in exceptional vintages and aged 5+ years before release, is the estate's rarest offering, typically averaging above $250–300 per bottle at auction and representing under 10,000 bottles per vintage.

In the Glass

Montalcino Sangiovese: the estate Brunello shows cherry, dried rose, iron, and tobacco with earthy depth; Poggio alle Mura is more concentrated and mineral—dark cherry, graphite, and forest floor. Poggio Oro Riserva adds extraordinary density: leather, truffle, dried herb, and a long tannic finish. SummuS is more approachable, with Sangiovese's cherry character softened by Cabernet and Syrah. All reds share Montalcino's characteristic balance of fruit richness and tannic structure.
