Castello dei Rampolla

Castello dei Rampolla in Panzano in Chianti, owned by the Di Napoli Rampolla family, is one of Chianti Classico's most distinguished estates and a pioneering force in biodynamic viticulture in Tuscany. The flagship Sammarco—a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend introduced in 1980—was among the earliest Super Tuscans and remains one of the most critically respected. Alceo, a Petit Verdot-dominant blend introduced in 1996, achieves consistently high scores using a variety rarely found as a primary component in Italian fine wine. The Chianti Classico provides the estate's volume tier. Under Luca Di Napoli Rampolla, the estate has practiced biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s. At auction, 822 lots average $128 per bottle with a ceiling of $1,195. The 2013 vintage tops the auction database. Alceo commands the highest prices—often $200–400 in top vintages—while Sammarco averages in the $100–200 range. The estate's location on Panzano's prime south-facing Conca d'Oro slopes provides excellent sun exposure and well-drained galestro and alberese soils.

Alceo, a Petit Verdot-dominant (85%) blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of very few fine wines globally to use Petit Verdot as the primary variety; it regularly achieves 95–98 points and trades at $200–400 per bottle in top vintages, making it the portfolio's most distinctive and critical wine.
Sammarco, first produced in 1980 as a Cabernet Sauvignon-Sangiovese blend, was among Tuscany's pioneering Super Tuscans alongside Tignanello and Sassicaia; the 1980 vintage predates many now-famous Super Tuscans and established the Di Napoli Rampolla family as early adopters of international blending in Chianti.
The estate has practiced biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s—among the earliest in Tuscany—with no synthetic chemicals, lunar-calendar farming, and compost-based soil management, credited by critics with the wines' distinctive energy and precision.
Panzano's Conca d'Oro is considered Chianti Classico's most prized sub-zone for Sangiovese and Cabernet, with south-facing slopes, well-drained galestro soils, and high elevation producing wines of greater concentration and aromatic intensity than lower-altitude sites.

In the Glass

Alceo leads with extraordinary Petit Verdot intensity: dense dark fruit, violet, graphite, and iron with Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure. Sammarco shows Panzano Cabernet complexity: blackcurrant, dried rose, cedar, and mineral depth from galestro soils, with Sangiovese adding sour cherry and earthy lift. Chianti Classico is the most accessible: sour cherry, herb, and light tannins for food pairing. Biodynamic farming contributes vibrancy and saline minerality distinguishing all three tiers from neighboring estates.
