Cavallotto

Tenuta Vitivinicola Cavallotto is a traditional Barolo estate based in the Bricco Boschis vineyard in the Castiglione Falletto commune—a renowned MGA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) site—farming 23 hectares that are entirely within the Bricco Boschis hill. The estate has been family-owned since 1928 and maintains strictly traditional winemaking: long maceration, aging in large Slavonian oak botti for three or more years, and no new French oak. Three Bricco Boschis Riserva labels are produced: Vigna San Giuseppe, Vigna Bricco Boschis Colle Sud-Ovest, and the generic Riserva. At auction, the estate generates 337 lots at $167 average with the 2010 vintage most-traded. San Giuseppe Riserva ($235, 76 lots) and Colle Sud-Ovest ($279, 5 lots) command the highest premiums; the standard Bricco Boschis ($105, 100 lots) is the highest-volume wine. Prices reach $1,673 for rare Riserva lots. The 1971 Riserva Speciale ($246, 7 lots) demonstrates the estate's extraordinary longevity.

Cavallotto farms 23 hectares entirely within the single Bricco Boschis MGA in Castiglione Falletto, making it one of the few Barolo estates fully committed to a single cru's expression.
Traditional Barolo production—long maceration and aging in large Slavonian oak botti for 3+ years, no new French oak—has been maintained continuously since the family took ownership in 1928.
The San Giuseppe Riserva averages $235 per bottle across 76 lots, with the 2010 vintage the reference year; Riserva Colle Sud-Ovest reaches $279 for rare vintages.
A 1971 Riserva Speciale trades at $246 average in the auction database, demonstrating that traditional Cavallotto Barolo remains functional and collectible after five decades.

In the Glass

Traditional Castiglione Falletto Barolo: dried rose, tar, iron, orange peel, leather, and cherry on a firm, structured tannic frame typical of the commune's rocky, limestone-clay soils. Whole-cluster, long-maceration production adds complexity and grip; large-oak aging delivers subtler oak influence than French barriques. The wines are austere in youth and need 10–15 years minimum, but develop remarkable complexity over 20–30 years.
