Chateau Canon

Château Canon is a Premier Grand Cru Classé B in Saint-Émilion, established in 1760 and named after the privateer Jacques Kanon who owned it in the 18th century. Chanel (Karl Lagerfeld era) acquired the estate in 1996, and subsequent investment in drainage, vine replanting, and a new winery has transformed it into one of Saint-Émilion's most consistent overachievers. The 22-hectare vineyard on the plateau and upper slope of Saint-Émilion is planted approximately 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc on deep clay limestone soils. Across 1,169 auction lots averaging $197 per bottle, Canon is a strong mid-tier Saint-Émilion collectible. Benchmark vintages include 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2022, with the estate increasingly cited as a plateau-level reference. The 2018 received 99 points from Wine Advocate. Second wine Croix Canon provides value access. The Canon-Fronsac appellation label (a separate geographical denomination north of Saint-Émilion) trades at much lower levels. At auction, the Saint-Émilion grand vin typically commands $150–$350 per bottle for recent top vintages. Canon's proximity to Petrus neighbours — the estate borders Beau-Séjour Bécot and backs onto the plateau limestone — gives it among the best subsoil positions in the appellation. Nicolas Audebert serves as estate director.

The 2018 Château Canon received 99 points from Wine Advocate, one of the highest scores in the estate's history and placing it among the vintage's benchmark wines; it trades above $250 per bottle at auction.
Chanel SA's 1996 acquisition triggered an estimated €50+ million investment in vineyard replanting, new drainage systems, and a complete cellar renovation; the quality transformation is traceable from approximately 2012 onward.
Canon's 22-hectare vineyard sits on the plateau and upper slope limestone — among Saint-Émilion's most classical terroirs — planted 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc on deep clay-limestone soils with natural drainage advantages.
The estate's name derives from Jacques Kanon, a French privateer who purchased the property in the 1760s; the château has historical continuity of fine wine production for over 250 years, one of Saint-Émilion's longest records.

In the Glass

Château Canon is Saint-Émilion at its most classically structured: medium-full body with firm Cabernet Franc-influenced tannins, black cherry, fresh plum, dried flowers, graphite, and limestone minerality. Less opulent than plateau leaders Pétrus or Cheval Blanc; more linear and age-worthy than many of the appellation's newer-style producers. The Merlot provides roundness and dark fruit richness, while Cabernet Franc adds aromatic complexity and structural precision. Prime drinking window is typically 10–25 years post-vintage.
