Chateau Carbonnieux

Château Carbonnieux is a historic Cru Classé de Graves estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, classified in both red and white categories in the 1959 Graves classification. The estate covers approximately 92 hectares and is one of the largest classified Graves properties, owned by the Perrin family since 1956. The rouge is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend averaging $64 at auction — representative of Graves' gravelly, tobacco-inflected red style — while the second label Le Croix de Carbonnieux Blanc averages $42. Carbonnieux's white wine is historically as significant as the red: a Sauvignon Blanc-dominant blend with Sémillon that was reputedly sent to the Ottoman court of Suleiman the Magnificent in the 18th century labeled as 'Eau Minérale de Carbonnieux' to circumvent Islamic alcohol prohibitions. The 2005 vintage is the most actively traded at auction for the rouge, consistent with that year's exceptional concentration across the Médoc and Graves. Auction prices range from $1 to $800, the upper end reflecting either older classified vintages from the 1980s or formats larger than standard 750ml. At $60 average across 107 lots, Carbonnieux trades as a reliable Cru Classé at accessible prices — competitive with its peers Domaine de Chevalier and Haut-Bailly at a lower price point.

Château Carbonnieux was classified in both red and white categories in the 1959 Graves classification — one of only a handful of Bordeaux estates to hold dual classification.

In the Glass

Carbonnieux rouge is classic Pessac-Léognan: Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant with blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, graphite, and the appellation's distinctive gravelly mineral quality. Merlot adds mid-palate roundness. The blanc, when it appears, shows grapefruit, white peach, and cut grass from Sauvignon Blanc with waxy texture from Sémillon. Both wines are medium-weight with good acidity and are made for drinking at 5–15 years.
