Chateau Duhart-Milon

Chateau Duhart-Milon, the sole Fourth Growth estate owned by DBR Lafite (the Rothschild family's Bordeaux operation), sits in Pauillac adjacent to Lafite Rothschild with whom it shares ownership and winemaking oversight. Acquired by DBR in 1962, the estate underwent substantial renovation and replanting through the 1970s and 1980s as the Rothschilds invested heavily to elevate quality toward its classification potential. The vineyards—approximately 76 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated plantings on the plateau north of Pauillac—produce wines with the characteristic lead pencil and blackcurrant structure of the appellation, though with more approachability in youth than the first growths. At auction, 1,120 lots average $127 per bottle with a top price of $1,722. The 2009 vintage is the most sought-after auction year. Other strong vintages include 2000, 2005, 2010, 2016, and 2018. The second wines Baron de Milon and Moulin de Duhart provide volume below the grand vin. Duhart-Milon benefits from Rothschild winemaking infrastructure and Lafite adjacency, supporting secondary market prices that comfortably exceed most other Fourth Growths.

Duhart-Milon is the only Fourth Growth Pauillac owned by a first growth family, sharing winemaking oversight with Lafite Rothschild under DBR's technical team—a relationship that directly elevates production standards relative to classification peers.
The estate covers approximately 76 hectares planted to roughly 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, with the grand vin typically receiving only 40–50% of total production; the remainder goes to Baron de Milon.
The 2009 Duhart-Milon received 92–94 points from major critics and has averaged well above $150 per bottle at auction—approximately 20% above the long-run portfolio average of $127.
Prior to DBR Lafite's 1962 acquisition, Duhart-Milon was in significant decline; the Rothschilds spent three decades replanting and renovating before the estate began consistently achieving its Fourth Growth potential in the 1990s.

In the Glass

Classic Pauillac structure: blackcurrant, cedar, lead pencil, and dried tobacco on the grand vin, with Merlot adding plum and a softer mid-palate. Less austere than Lafite in youth, Duhart-Milon shows an accessible, medium-weight style with firm but approachable tannins. Good vintages develop secondary notes of graphite, cigar box, and forest floor with 10–20 years of age.
