Chateau Figeac

Château Figeac is a Premier Grand Cru Classé B — elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification alongside just four other estates — with 54 hectares in the western sector of Saint-Émilion, bordering Cheval Blanc on its northern edge. The estate is unusual for Saint-Émilion in its encépagement: approximately 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Merlot, reflecting the gravelly sand soils that favour Cabernets rather than clay. This composition produces a Saint-Émilion of Médoc-like structure and ageing potential. The Manoncourt family has owned Figeac since 1892; Eric d'Aramon oversees production today. Across 1,227 auction lots averaging $277 per bottle, Figeac occupies a strong position in the Saint-Émilion collectible tier. Key vintages include 1990, 1998, 2010, 2015, and 2018. The 2022 A-level promotion drove significant auction price appreciation — the estate now regularly commands $250–$500 for recent vintages, compared with $150–$250 before the reclassification. Petit-Figeac serves as the estate's second wine and provides accessible introduction to the house style. Figeac's Cabernet-dominated blend differentiates it from most Saint-Émilion estates and appeals to collectors seeking structured, cellar-worthy wines of unusual complexity rather than the richer Merlot-dominant expressions typical of the plateau.

Figeac was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification, joining Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Angélus, and Pavie at the appellation's top tier; this promotion triggered measurable auction price appreciation.
The estate's encépagement — 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot — is unique in Saint-Émilion and reflects the distinctive gravel-sand soils that border Cheval Blanc; this Cabernet-dominant blend produces wines more structurally similar to Pauillac than Pomerol.
The Manoncourt family has owned Figeac continuously since 1892, maintaining one of Saint-Émilion's longest single-family ownership records; the estate's records document viticulture on the site dating to Roman times.
The 2022 reclassification produced the largest auction price move for Figeac since the 1980s; 2018 and 2019 vintages — pre-reclassification but at full A-level quality — represent particular auction value relative to post-announcement pricing.

In the Glass

Château Figeac is Saint-Émilion's most structured and intellectually complex wine, shaped by equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc: blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, dark cherry, and fine graphite minerality on the nose. The palate is medium-full bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and a linear precision rare in the appellation. Far less opulent than Pomerol neighbours; more Médoc-like in structure. The Merlot component adds suppleness and dark fruit. Prime ageing range is 15–30 years in top vintages.
