Chateau Fleur Cardinale

Chateau Fleur Cardinale is a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe estate in Saint-Etienne de Lisse, on the limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes on the eastern portion of the Saint-Emilion appellation. The property has approximately 20 hectares under vine, planted predominantly to Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate was acquired by Dominique and Florence Decoster in 2001, who invested heavily in both the vineyards and a modern gravity-flow cellar. Fleur Cardinale achieved Grand Cru Classe status in 2006 (confirmed in 2012) following the Decosters' improvements. The auction data shows 255 lots averaging $67 per bottle — ranging from $30 to $382 — placing it in the accessible range of classified Saint-Emilion. The main wine trades around $50–$100 per bottle depending on vintage, while the Intuition de Fleur Cardinale (the second wine) provides entry-level access to the estate. Top vintages from exceptional Saint-Emilion years — 2009, 2010, 2015 — drive the $382 ceiling. The estate has benefitted from the general revaluation of right-bank Merlot-dominant wines, though it has not achieved the premium of estates like Pavie, Troplong Mondot, or Figeac. For collectors on a budget targeting classified Saint-Emilion terroir, Fleur Cardinale's clay-limestone east-plateau parcels offer one of the better value propositions in the appellation, particularly in riper vintages where Merlot achieves full physiological ripeness.

Chateau Fleur Cardinale achieved Grand Cru Classe status in 2006 under the Decosters' ownership, recognition that validated significant capital investment in vineyard management and a new gravity-flow winery since 2001.
Located in Saint-Etienne de Lisse on the eastern plateau, the estate's clay-limestone soils produce Merlot-dominant wines with notable freshness and aromatic lift compared to the denser, more powerful wines from the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau proper.
Auction prices range $30–$382 with an average of $67, placing Fleur Cardinale at the accessible end of Grand Cru Classe Saint-Emilion — offering good value relative to more famous names in the classification.
The Intuition de Fleur Cardinale second wine trades at the lower end of the auction range, providing entry-level access to the estate's terroir and the Decoster winemaking approach at significantly lower price points than the grand vin.

In the Glass

Merlot-dominant Saint-Emilion from clay-limestone soils: ripe plum, black cherry, blueberry, and violet with mocha, cedar, and subtle earth. The eastern Saint-Etienne de Lisse terroir contributes more freshness and aromatic precision than the heavier clay-dominant parcels closer to Pomerol. Medium-full body with polished tannins and moderate acidity. Approachable from release but gains complexity over 8–15 years. The estate's eastern plateau limestone contributes freshness that prevents Merlot from becoming heavy — a distinction from some warmer Saint-Emilion sites. Most accessible at 5–10 years from vintage.
