Chateau Gloria

Chateau Gloria is a Saint-Julien estate assembled beginning in 1942 by Henri Martin, who built the property by acquiring individual parcels that had previously belonged to classified châteaux including Léoville-Barton, Gruaud-Larose, and Saint-Pierre — vineyards that would theoretically merit Cru Classé status if the 1855 classification were revised today. Despite this prestigious raw material, Gloria remains unclassified because the classification is property-based rather than vineyard-based, and Martin began assembling his estate 87 years after the classification was fixed in 1855. The wine — a blend of approximately 65% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot — is consequently priced well below neighbouring classified properties despite drawing from classified-quality terroir. Parker has scored Gloria 90–93 points in strong vintages, and the wine's quality-to-price ratio has long been championed by critics as one of Bordeaux's best consistent values. With 549 lots averaging $75 per bottle, Gloria trades at accessible commodity Bordeaux pricing. Production is substantial at approximately 15,000 cases per year, ensuring good secondary market liquidity across all major auction houses. Château Saint-Pierre, a 4ème Cru Classé also owned by the Martin family and based in the same commune, provides an interesting classified-growth counterpart to Gloria's unclassified but arguably superior vineyard holdings.

Henri Martin assembled Chateau Gloria from parcels previously belonging to classified châteaux including Léoville-Barton and Gruaud-Larose — arguably classified-quality terroir denied the classification title by timing.
Gloria remains unclassified despite drawing from historically classified vineyards, as the 1855 classification is based on the château as an entity, not the individual parcels comprising it.
The wine earns 90–93 points from Parker in strong vintages and is widely cited as one of Bordeaux's best quality-to-price values at $30–60 per bottle — well below classified Saint-Julien neighbours.
549 lots average $75 per bottle with production around 15,000 cases annually — providing the secondary market liquidity that allows regular trading at accessible prices across major auction houses.

In the Glass

Saint-Julien Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend on formerly classified terroir: blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, and dried herbs with the graceful medium-bodied structure and long finish characteristic of the commune. More accessible and earlier-drinking than the great classified growths; a 65% Cabernet Sauvignon backbone provides structure while Merlot adds roundness. Drinks well at 8–15 years; offers consistent Saint-Julien typicity at well below classified-growth prices.
