Chateau La Vieille Cure

Château La Vieille Cure is a Fronsac estate that attracted serious attention in the 1990s after purchase by a group of American investors in 1986, who invested in cellar renovation and brought professional winemaking oversight to what had been a largely underperforming property. At its peak the château produced concentrated, structured Merlot-dominant wines from limestone-clay plateau terroirs that rivalled mid-tier Pomerol in density and expression. Subsequent ownership changes introduced inconsistency that has affected the estate's auction reputation and market presence. The 268-lot record averages $38 per bottle — reflecting both Fronsac's structural undervaluation and the estate's uneven ownership history. The 1999 vintage is the most-traded year, aligning with the property's peak decade under American oversight. The price ceiling of $295 represents rare peak-vintage bottles in excellent condition; the broad $12–$295 range reflects significant condition and vintage variation across the auction pool. For collectors willing to accept that vintage risk, La Vieille Cure offers genuine Fronsac plateau character — limestone minerality, structured Merlot, and solid Cabernet Franc — at some of the most accessible prices available for any serious Right Bank appellation. The estate's peak era bottles from 1995–2001 remain the most reliably rewarding, with good provenance essential given the wide condition variation in the broader auction pool.

In the Glass

La Vieille Cure at its best is structured Fronsac Merlot — dark plum, earthy limestone minerality, tobacco, and dried herb. Cabernet Franc adds a green-olive and cedar note. The wines are less plush than Pomerol — drier on the finish with more tannic grip — and need 8–12 years before softening. Older vintages from the 1990s show impressive development when well-cellared.
