Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is Bordeaux's most traded wine by auction volume and value across multiple decades, its combination of First Growth status, elegant style, and historic Chinese market demand making it the most financially significant wine brand in the world by secondary market turnover. The estate farms 112 hectares in the northern Pauillac commune on a gentle gravel ridge, producing a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend (typically 70–80% Cabernet) of renowned finesse and perfume. The Rothschild family — specifically the Paris branch under Baron Eric — has owned the estate since 1868. Lafite's reputation rests on its distinctive aromatic style: lighter in colour than Latour or Mouton, the wine is more perfumed, more delicate, and more cerebral — described by generations of critics as the most complete and harmonious of the First Growths. The second wine, Carruades de Lafite, has become one of the most actively traded second labels in Bordeaux. Lafite also owns Duhart-Milon (Fourth Growth Pauillac), Rieussec (First Growth Sauternes), and L'Evangile (Pomerol) among other estates. Lafite's Chinese market premium — driven by gift-giving culture and its phonetic similarity to auspicious Chinese characters — reached extraordinary levels in the mid-2000s to mid-2010s, creating auction premiums for certain vintages (especially 1982, 2008, and 2009) that exceeded all comparable First Growths. This premium has moderated since 2013 but remains structurally higher than other châteaux for the same vintages.

Château Lafite Rothschild is the most traded wine by auction volume in the world — a position maintained through decades of demand from the Asian market, where the 1982 and 2008 vintages commanded extraordinary premiums driven in part by Mandarin phonetics.
The estate's 112 hectares produce approximately 250,000 bottles per year of the grand vin — roughly three times the volume of Pétrus — making it the most widely distributed First Growth and a global reference for Bordeaux luxury.
The second wine, Carruades de Lafite, is the most actively traded second label in Bordeaux; in exceptional vintages it approaches the price of many classified châteaux despite being technically a declassified selection.
The Rothschild family's ownership of Lafite since 1868 makes it the longest continuously family-owned First Growth; the family has used the estate's prestige to build one of Bordeaux's most extensive portfolios, including Duhart-Milon, Rieussec, and L'Évangile.

In the Glass

Lafite Rothschild is the most refined and cerebral of the First Growths: pale ruby in youth, with violets, cedar, pencil shavings, and a delicate red fruit quality that sets it apart from the darker, more concentrated styles of Latour and Mouton. The tannins are the silkiest of any Pauillac; the acidity gives exceptional freshness and longevity. Great vintages — 1961, 1982, 1996, 2010 — develop extraordinary complexity of iron, tobacco, and dried flowers with 20–40 years of age.
