Chateau Lynch-Bages

Lynch-Bages stands as one of Pauillac's most beloved estates, a Fifth Growth that consistently punches well above its classification. The property traces its roots to the early 18th century when the Lynch family — Irish Jacobites who emigrated to Bordeaux — acquired the vineyards on the Bages plateau. Today the estate is owned by the Cazes family, who purchased it in 1934 and have devoted nearly a century to elevating its reputation. The 100-hectare vineyard sits on deep Günzian gravel over clay and limestone, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Winemaking emphasises extraction and concentration: the wines are full-bodied, rich with black fruit, cedar, graphite, and a characteristic meaty depth that Pauillac devotees prize. Lynch-Bages ages remarkably well, with top vintages such as 1989, 1990, 2000, 2009, and 2010 drinking magnificently at 20–30 years. The estate also produces the excellent Echo de Lynch-Bages second wine. Under Jean-Charles Cazes, a major winery renovation completed in 2019 introduced new fermentation vessels and barrel chai, further refining the style. Lynch-Bages remains one of the best-value classified growths, a regular feature at auction where its reliability and approachability sustain strong demand across all recent vintages.

In the Glass

Rich and full-bodied, Lynch-Bages delivers classic Pauillac character: blackcurrant, plum, tobacco, cedar, and a meaty mineral depth. The tannins are generous but rounded, lending accessibility without sacrificing the structure needed for long aging.
