Chateau Pavie

Château Pavie is Saint-Émilion's most controversial and celebrated estate, transformed by Gérard Perse from a respected but unremarkable Premier Grand Cru Classé into a wine of almost overwhelming concentration and power. Perse purchased the estate in 1998 and immediately began a radical programme of replanting, yield reduction, and late harvesting that resulted in wines of extraordinary richness. The 37-hectare vineyard occupies a prime position on the limestone plateau and Côtes of Saint-Émilion, planted predominantly to Merlot. The 2003 vintage — a year of extreme heat — became one of the most polarising bottles in Bordeaux history, winning perfect scores from some critics and derision from others. In 2012, Pavie was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A, one of only four estates at that level, a promotion that intensified both admiration and controversy. Under winemaker Nicolas Thienpont, the style has evolved toward greater balance. The wines are unmistakeably concentrated and hedonistic: black fruits, dark chocolate, espresso, and mineral complexity from the limestone soils. At auction, Pavie has become one of the most actively traded Saint-Émilion estates, with collectors who appreciate its style bidding aggressively for the greatest vintages.

In the Glass

Pavie is Saint-Émilion at its most hedonistic and concentrated: dense black cherry, blackberry, espresso, dark chocolate, and mineral limestone notes. The tannins are rich and velvety, the fruit intensity extraordinary, and the wine rewards at least a decade of cellaring.
