Chateau Quinault L'Enclos

Chateau Quinault L'Enclos is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé property uniquely situated within the urban limits of Saint-Émilion town — its 18-hectare vineyard entirely surrounded by residential and commercial buildings. The property was acquired in 1997 by Alain and Françoise Raynaud, who had previously established Château La Croix de Gay in Pomerol, and dramatically elevated quality through significant replanting and hiring Stéphane Derenoncourt as consulting winemaker. The wine is a Merlot-dominant blend with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, made in an opulent, modern style with significant new oak. A prestige cuvée, L'Absolu de Quinault, is produced in small quantities from the oldest and best-situated parcels. Across 474 auction lots, the estate averages $156 per bottle with a ceiling of $800. Robert Parker awarded the 2000 vintage 96 points, helping establish the estate's reputation as a serious right-bank address. The estate was acquired by LVMH in 2014, adding it to the luxury group's Saint-Émilion holdings alongside Cheval Blanc.

In the Glass

Quinault L'Enclos is a modern Saint-Émilion of opulence and polish: black plum, mocha, dark chocolate, and espresso with prominent new oak framing and plush, silky tannins. Merlot dominates the blend, providing the warmth and texture; Cabernet Franc adds floral lift and structure. L'Absolu de Quinault amplifies these characteristics with greater concentration and complexity. The wines are approachable at 5–8 years and evolve well for 15–20 in top vintages.
