Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf

Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf is one of Saint-Émilion's most singular micro-estates, a 5.8-hectare property on the steep southeastern slopes of the limestone plateau farmed by François Mitjavile and his wife since 1978. Mitjavile is a philosophical and practical iconoclast: he harvests exceptionally late by Bordeaux standards, sometimes into November, seeking physiological ripeness that produces wines of extraordinary concentration, opulence, and aromatic complexity — more reminiscent of great Burgundy in perfume than typical Bordeaux in structure. The estate is classified as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru but has never sought the Classé designation, an intentional rejection of Bordeaux's classification hierarchy. With only 5.8 hectares planted to approximately 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, production is tiny — rarely exceeding 1,800–2,000 cases per year — making Tertre Roteboeuf one of the most genuinely scarce Right Bank addresses at auction. The result at auction is remarkable: 700 lots averaging $181 per bottle with a ceiling exceeding $2,200, reflecting the wines' cult status among collectors. Parker awarded 99 points to the 2005 and 100 points to the 1998, with the 2000 earning 98 points and consistently fetching $250–400 per bottle at specialist Bordeaux auctions. The concentrated, heady style has divided critics — some calling it overripe — but the secondary market has consistently validated Mitjavile's approach with rising prices.

Parker awarded 100 points to the 1998 Tertre Roteboeuf and 99 points to the 2005, with the 2000 earning 98 — establishing it as a Right Bank cult estate rivalling Pétrus for critical acclaim per hectare.

In the Glass

Almost exclusively Merlot-driven from steep limestone slopes harvested at extreme ripeness: dense blackberry, mocha, dark chocolate, and prune with extraordinary floral perfume — violets, roses — that sets it apart from typical Saint-Émilion. Tannins are ripe and velvety; acidity is lower than Left Bank styles. The wines are approachable young but reward 15–25 years in the best vintages.
