Chateau Trotanoy

Château Trotanoy is a 7.2-hectare estate in Pomerol managed by the Moueix family, who acquired it in 1953 and position it as their second most prestigious holding after Pétrus. The vineyard sits on a clay-rich plateau with iron-laced subsoils similar to those of Pétrus, planted to approximately 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with many vines exceeding 50 years of age at the time of harvest. Jean-Claude Berrouet directed winemaking from 1964 to 2008, establishing the wine's distinctive full-bodied, earthy character through careful control of extraction and oak aging; his son Olivier Berrouet has continued in the role since. Trotanoy achieved its greatest critical recognition in the 1970s and 1980s — the 1971, 1975, and 1982 are considered among the finest Pomerols ever produced — but modern vintages have received outstanding scores as well, particularly 2015 and 2016. Auction data shows 926 lots of the grand vin at a $414 average with a $7,170 ceiling and 2016 as the most actively traded vintage. L'Espérance de Trotanoy, the second wine introduced in 2012 from younger vine selections, averages $628 across only 5 lots — atypically higher than the grand vin likely due to the small sample size of early-release auctions skewed by presentation format. Annual production of approximately 1,200 cases sustains meaningful auction presence while maintaining the scarcity characteristic of top Pomerol properties.

Château Trotanoy averages $414 across 926 auction lots, positioning it in Pomerol's second tier below Pétrus but above the appellation's broader market, with peak prices reaching $7,170.
The 1971, 1975, and 1982 vintages are considered among the greatest Pomerols ever produced, with the 1975 particularly notable as a year when many Médoc châteaux underperformed.
The vineyard's average vine age exceeds 50 years, contributing concentrated, complex fruit from deep-rooted clay and iron subsoils virtually identical to those of Pétrus.
The 2016 vintage is the most actively traded, consistent with the broader Pomerol market where 2015 and 2016 represent the strongest recent releases at 95–98 critical points.

In the Glass

Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol's most powerful and structured expressions — full-bodied, iron-mineral Merlot with dark plum, prune, truffle, and coffee on a tannic frame that in great vintages rivals Pétrus in density. The Moueix preference for restraint and precision creates a wine more austere in youth than many Pomerol peers, typically requiring 10–15 years to integrate fully. Old vintages develop profound secondary notes of dried flowers, tobacco, iron-rich earth, and warm leather.
