Christophe Roumier

Christophe Roumier inherited one of Burgundy's most hallowed domaines from his father Georges in 1990 and has elevated it to near-mythological collector status over three decades. Based in Chambolle-Musigny, the domaine holds grand cru parcels in Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, Ruchottes-Chambertin, and Charmes-Chambertin, along with the revered premier cru Les Amoureuses and village Chambolle bottlings. Roumier practices minimal-intervention viticulture across 11 hectares, producing wines of extraordinary precision, finesse, and site expression from each parcel. At auction, prices rival DRC for the rarest cuvées: Musigny routinely exceeds $3,000–$5,000 per bottle; Les Amoureuses trades at $800–$1,500; even village Chambolle reaches $200+. The 119 lots in this database at an average of $1,023 reflect mid-range holdings — Ruchottes-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin — which appear most frequently at auction since the more coveted cuvées rarely surface. Ruchottes, from a tiny parcel adjacent to Clos des Ruchottes, averages $600–$900 and regularly earns 95–97 points. Charmes-Chambertin is more accessible at $400–$600. Retail access to Roumier is essentially impossible outside legacy restaurant accounts, making auction the primary acquisition route for most international collectors. Benchmark vintages 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2019 are the most sought after. The wines improve substantially with decanting even in youth, and the 2004, 2010, and 2016 vintages are the most recommended for long-term cellaring given their exceptional structural balance.

The domaine's Musigny parcel is approximately 0.1 hectares — one of the smallest in the appellation — yielding around 300 bottles annually, making it among the rarest grand cru Burgundies on the planet.
Roumier's Les Amoureuses, from a 0.35-hectare premier cru parcel, consistently achieves grand cru prices at auction, with recent vintages trading between $800 and $1,500 per bottle.
The 2005, 2010, and 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin each received 96–98 points from critics including Allen Meadows (Burghound) and William Kelley (Wine Advocate), anchoring the estate's critical reputation.
Average auction realization across 119 lots is $1,023 per bottle, driven primarily by Ruchottes-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin; rarer cuvées such as Musigny and Amoureuses inflate realized prices dramatically when they appear.

In the Glass

Chambolle refinement at every tier: red cherry, wild strawberry, crushed violet, and white pepper on the nose, with silken tannins, extraordinary mineral precision, and restrained oak. Grand cru expressions add dark fruit, smoke, and iron, building considerable complexity over 15–25 years. Even the Charmes-Chambertin shows the lifted, perfumed character that distinguishes Roumier from heavier, more extracted Gevrey-style Pinot Noir producers in Burgundy.
