Clos du Val

Clos du Val is a Stags Leap District pioneer, founded in 1972 by John Goelet and winemaker Bernard Portet, son of the technical director of Château Lafite Rothschild. The French connection was deliberate: Portet sought to produce structured, European-style Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa, and the 1972 Clos du Val Cabernet was entered into the famous 1976 Paris Tasting alongside Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. The estate's Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon has been the workhorse of the 315-lot auction record at $123 average, supplemented by a Reserve Cabernet averaging higher and small lots of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Zinfandel. Bernard Portet retired in 2008 and was succeeded by a series of winemakers, with the estate now managed by the Goelet family. Clos du Val Cabernets from the 1970s through the 1990s represent some of the most historically significant bottles in California wine, trading well above their modest release prices. The Stags Leap District's volcanic soils and afternoon winds from San Pablo Bay produce Cabernet of notable elegance and finesse, a terroir character the estate exploited earlier than most Napa producers recognised.

Clos du Val was among the California Cabernets entered in the landmark 1976 Paris Tasting alongside Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, placing it at the origin point of Napa's international recognition story.
Winemaker Bernard Portet, son of Château Lafite's technical director, founded the estate in 1972 with an explicit goal of European-structured Napa Cabernet — a philosophy still evident in the wines' finesse over power, averaging $123 per bottle across 315 lots.
The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and older vintages from the 1970s–1980s trade at significant premiums within the 315-lot record, reflecting the historical importance of the estate's early bottles.
The Stags Leap District's volcanic soil and cooling afternoon winds from San Pablo Bay give Clos du Val's site a distinctive terroir character: silk-textured, elegant Cabernet with lower tannin aggression than other Napa sub-AVAs.

In the Glass

Clos du Val Cabernets are the definition of Stags Leap District finesse: blackcurrant and red cherry with violets, fine-grained silky tannins, and a European restraint that sets them apart from heavier Oakville or Rutherford neighbours. The Reserve adds depth and concentration without sacrificing the inherent elegance. Merlot and Cabernet Franc bottlings are lighter and food-compatible. Top vintages develop cedar and tobacco complexity over 20 or more years.
