Col d'Orcia
Col d'Orcia is one of Montalcino's largest and most historically significant estates, covering over 540 hectares in the southwestern sector of the denomination near Sant'Angelo in Colle. The estate was acquired by Count Francesco Marone Cinzano in 1973 and has been certified organic since 1992. The primary Brunello di Montalcino is a classic, traditionally styled wine made from Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello clone) aged in large Slavonian oak casks. The estate's crown jewel is Poggio al Vento Riserva, sourced from a single 6-hectare vineyard in the southwestern quadrant, which scores consistently in the mid-to-high 90s for top vintages. At auction, the estate averages $80 per bottle across 126 lots, with prices ranging from $6 to $551 — the upper end driven by older Riserva vintages. Col d'Orcia also produces Nearco (a Sangiovese-Cabernet blend) and Nastagio (Merlot), reflecting the estate's broad production base. The organic certification and traditional winemaking philosophy have built a loyal following among collectors seeking classic Montalcino.

In the Glass
Col d'Orcia Brunello is classically styled: dried cherry, leather, tobacco, dried herbs, and iron minerality with firm, age-worthy tannins and high acidity. The standard Brunello is approachable at 8–10 years; Poggio al Vento Riserva needs 12–20 years to fully integrate. The Nearco blend adds a rounder, more modern Bordeaux-influenced dimension to the portfolio.
