Colgin

Colgin Cellars was established by Ann Colgin and Joe Wender in 1992, originally sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon from the Herb Lamb Vineyard on Napa Valley's eastern hillsides before developing the IX Estate property in the Atlas Peak AVA. The winery later added the Tychson Hill Vineyard in St. Helena and the Cariad blend, which draws from multiple Napa sources including the Madrona Ranch. Winemaking transitioned to Allison Tavernero following the departure of consulting partnership with Helen Turley. Colgin's positioning at the apex of Napa's collector market — alongside Screaming Eagle, Harlan, and Dominus — reflects critical scores predominantly in the 96–100-point range and very limited production of approximately 500–1,000 cases per wine. Auction data confirms this status: 2,422 lots at a $357 average with a $3,824 ceiling. Tychson Hill leads with 756 lots at $470 average, the highest in the portfolio, with 2012 as the benchmark vintage. Cariad, the most widely produced wine, achieves $372 across 632 lots with 2005 as the top vintage. IX Estate averages $301 and the IX Estate Syrah — an unusual varietal for Colgin reflecting the Atlas Peak site's cooler volcanic character — commands $224 across 167 lots. Original Herb Lamb Vineyard bottlings from the mid-1990s, now discontinued after the vineyard changed ownership, represent the most historically significant lots at auction, averaging $303 across 129 appearances.

Tychson Hill Cabernet Sauvignon averages $470 across 756 auction lots, the highest per-wine average in the portfolio, with 2012 as the most actively traded vintage.
The discontinued Herb Lamb Vineyard Cabernet, produced from 1992–2004, averages $303 across 129 lots — strong secondary market given its historical significance as Colgin's founding wine.
Portfolio average of $357 across 2,422 lots places Colgin consistently above most Napa Cabernet peers, with prices reaching $3,824 for top-format, top-vintage bottles.
IX Estate Syrah averages $224 across 167 lots — an unusual Rhône varietal for a Napa prestige producer, reflecting the Atlas Peak site's cooler volcanic terroir.

In the Glass

Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon wines display full-bodied, polished profiles with blackcurrant, dark plum, and mocha on a foundation of silky, well-integrated tannins drawn from Atlas Peak and St. Helena terroirs. Tychson Hill shows a slightly more structured, mineral character; Cariad leans toward opulence with more obvious floral and vanillin oak notes alongside dark cherry. IX Estate Syrah departs toward violet, black olive, and cracked pepper typical of cooler-elevation Napa volcanic-soil Syrah.
