d'Arenberg

d'Arenberg is one of McLaren Vale's most storied and consistently excellent estates, a family business founded in 1912 and today run by the irrepressible Chester Osborn, whose colourful personality and eclectic wine names — The Dead Arm, The Coppermine Road, The Laughing Magpie, The Stump Jump — have made the estate one of Australia's most recognisable wine brands. The cellar door, designed as a massive folded wine cube, is a major tourist attraction. The estate's 180 hectares of vines include some of the oldest Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre plantings in the region. The Dead Arm Shiraz, from ancient dry-grown vines, is the flagship: a concentrated, powerful, and structured wine that can age for 15–20 years. The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon and the fortified Nostalgia Rare Tawny are also exceptional. d'Arenberg's commitment to dry-grown old vines and minimal intervention winemaking has created an extensive portfolio that includes both benchmark McLaren Vale expressions and innovative blends. At auction, The Dead Arm is the most actively traded wine from the estate, with older vintages from the 1990s and early 2000s commanding significant premiums.

In the Glass

d'Arenberg specialises in rich, concentrated McLaren Vale character: The Dead Arm delivers blackberry, dark chocolate, pepper, earth, and the distinctive savoury complexity of very old dry-grown Shiraz. The style balances power with structure, making wines accessible young but rewarding extended cellaring.
