Domaine Bonneau du Martray

Domaine Bonneau du Martray is the largest single owner of Corton-Charlemagne, holding 9.5 contiguous hectares of this Grand Cru straddling Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, alongside a 1.5-hectare parcel of red Corton. The vineyard's origins trace to a gift by Emperor Charlemagne to the monks of Saulieu in 775 AD; after passing through ecclesiastical ownership for over a millennium, it was acquired by the Bonneau du Martray family after the French Revolution. The estate was run by the Comtes de Nicolay for much of the 20th century before being acquired in 2017 by American billionaire Stan Kroenke, owner of Screaming Eagle. A further development came in 2018 when 2.8 hectares were leased to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, reducing Bonneau du Martray's Corton-Charlemagne production by approximately 25%. Despite the reduced scale, the estate's remaining 6.7 hectares still constitute the most important individual parcel in all of Corton-Charlemagne. At auction, Corton-Charlemagne commands $300–$700 per bottle, representing exceptional value for a Grand Cru white of this calibre.

Bonneau du Martray's 9.5 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne represent the largest single-owner block in this 51-hectare Grand Cru; the contiguous parcel provides exceptional consistency and the scale to craft wine of true terroir expression.
In 2018, 2.8 hectares were leased to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, reducing Bonneau du Martray's production by approximately 25%; DRC's entry into Corton-Charlemagne confirmed the vineyard's status as one of Burgundy's greatest white Grand Cru sites.
American billionaire Stan Kroenke acquired the estate in 2017, maintaining the technical team including winemaker Emmanuel Hautus and vineyard manager Fabien Esthor who has been with the domaine since 2003.
The vineyard's history extends to 775 AD when Emperor Charlemagne gifted it to the monks of Saulieu — over 1,250 years of documented cultivation on the same slopes, making it one of the longest-documented wine-producing sites in the world.

In the Glass

Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne is the definitive expression of this Grand Cru — broader and more powerful than Puligny-Montrachet, with the site's characteristic combination of ripe stone fruit, almond, and a stony mineral depth that develops over 10–15 years into complex, almost Burgundian-red-like savouriness. The red Corton offers a robust, earthy contrast — darker and more tannic than anything from Volnay or Chambolle.
