Domaine Comte Liger-Belair

Domaine Comte Liger-Belair holds one of the most remarkable histories in Burgundy: Napoleonic general Louis Liger-Belair acquired the Château de Vosne-Romanée in 1815, and the family assembled holdings that at one point included La Romanée, La Tâche, La Grande Rue, and parcels across six villages. After much of the estate was sold at auction in 1933, the family retained La Romanée and a few key parcels. For decades the grapes were sold to négociants — most notably Bouchard Père & Fils bottled La Romanée from the 1970s. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair reclaimed estate management in 2002, returning this 0.8452-hectare Grand Cru monopole — the smallest AOC in France — to family bottling for the first time in a generation. Today the 11-hectare domaine is certified organic, farmed with horses, and produces some 3,600 bottles of La Romanée per year. At auction, La Romanée commands $1,800–$5,000 per bottle, and the estate's rapid rise since 2002 mirrors the most exciting renaissance stories in Burgundy.

La Romanée Grand Cru, at 0.8452 hectares, is the smallest AOC in France; approximately 3,600 bottles per year are produced, making it rarer per release than Romanée-Conti itself.
Louis-Michel Liger-Belair reclaimed domaine management from négociant Bouchard Père & Fils in 2002, transforming the estate within a decade from négociant-bottled wine to one of Burgundy's most acclaimed addresses.
The Liger-Belair family connection to La Romanée dates to 1815, when Napoleonic general Louis Liger-Belair acquired the Château de Vosne-Romanée — over 200 years of continuous family ownership across upheavals including the 1933 dispersal sale.
The domaine is fully certified organic and ploughs all vineyards by horse; Louis-Michel employs whole-cluster fermentation for structure and ages in 40–60% new oak, producing wines of exceptional concentration and terroir purity.

In the Glass

Liger-Belair wines are among the most perfumed and precise in Vosne-Romanée — La Romanée delivers an ethereal combination of violet, rose, and iron minerality over black cherry and dark spice, gaining extraordinary complexity after a decade. Les Reignots is more accessible in youth with lifted red fruit and silky tannins. Aux Brûlées shows the warm, spicy power characteristic of this sun-exposed Premier Cru.
