Domaine Comtes Lafon

Domaine Comtes Lafon is Meursault's most celebrated estate, with roots tracing to 1865 and its definitive shape formed when Jules Lafon secured a parcel of Montrachet in 1918 — still the crown jewel of the 14-hectare estate. The domaine was run under a sharecropping arrangement for much of the 20th century before Dominique Lafon took full control in 1985, embarking on a radical transformation: organic farming from 1992, then biodynamic conversion completed in 1998 — one of the earliest full biodynamic certifications in Burgundy. Dominique retired in 2021, handing the estate to his daughter Léa and nephew Pierre, representing the fifth generation. The domaine produces white Burgundy of extraordinary depth from Meursault Perrières, Charmes, and Genevrières, as well as red wine from Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu. At auction, Lafon's Montrachet commands $2,500–$5,000 per bottle, while Meursault Perrières is the benchmark for the appellation, trading at $400–$900 per bottle.

Jules Lafon purchased the estate's Montrachet parcel in 1918; at 0.32 hectares it produces around 900 bottles annually of one of the world's most sought-after whites, with auction prices regularly reaching $3,000–$5,000 per bottle.
Dominique Lafon converted the entire 14-hectare estate to biodynamic viticulture by 1998 — among the first in Burgundy to do so — after initial trials in 1995 showed measurable improvements in vine health and wine complexity.
Dominique retired at the end of 2021, passing the domaine to his daughter Léa and nephew Pierre as the fifth generation; the seamless handover maintained the estate's consistently high critical scores through the 2022 and 2023 vintages.
The estate's Meursault Clos de la Barre is a village monopole within the domaine; alongside Perrières and Charmes, it demonstrates Lafon's ability to extract grand-cru-level complexity from Meursault's diverse Premier Cru terroirs.

In the Glass

Lafon's whites are textbook Meursault — rich, buttery, and opulent, with a deeper mineral spine than most producers in the village. Montrachet achieves a majestic fullness of hazelnuts, honey, and ginger underpinned by extraordinary acidity. Perrières is the most precise and structured; Charmes the most accessible in youth; Genevrières the most aromatic with white peach and almond blossom.
