Domaine Michel Juillot

Domaine Michel Juillot is the benchmark estate of Mercurey, with family roots in the village dating back to 1404 and the modern domaine established when Emile Juillot planted the first vineyards in 1929. Michel Juillot transformed the estate from a few hectares in the 1960s to its current 31 hectares, establishing important holdings not only in Mercurey but in the prestigious Côte de Beaune Grand Cru Corton. Laurent Juillot, the fourth generation, now leads the estate, producing over 180,000 bottles annually across 20 appellations from 21 hectares of Pinot Noir and 10 hectares of Chardonnay — half classified as Premier or Grand Cru. The domaine employs lutte raisonnée farming and harvests entirely by hand, notable for an estate of this scale. The Corton-Charlemagne vines, planted in 1965, are among the oldest in that Grand Cru appellation. At auction, Juillot's wines offer exceptional Burgundy value: Corton-Charlemagne at $120–$220 and Corton Perrières at $100–$180 represent some of the best price-quality Grand Cru propositions in the Côte d'Or.

The Juillot family has been present in Mercurey since 1404 — over 600 years — making them one of the longest-established wine families in the Côte Chalonnaise; the domaine as currently constituted was built by Michel Juillot from the 1960s onward.
Laurent Juillot's Corton-Charlemagne vines were planted in 1965, making them among the oldest in that Grand Cru appellation; the resulting wine consistently earns 92–95 points and auctions well below equivalent quality from Côte de Beaune producers.
The entire 31-hectare estate is harvested by hand — remarkable for its scale — using only indigenous yeasts; this commitment to artisanal methods distinguishes Michel Juillot from many larger Chalonnaise operations.
The domaine spans 20 appellations including three Grand Crus (Corton-Charlemagne, Corton Perrières, and Corton from other lieux-dits), providing extraordinary range for collectors seeking to explore both Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune terroir from a single reliable source.

In the Glass

Michel Juillot wines are dependable, honest expressions of their appellations — Mercurey Les Champs Martins shows earthy Pinot Noir with red cherry, tobacco, and a firm mineral backbone typical of the appellation. Corton-Charlemagne delivers impressive Grand Cru richness at approachable prices: hazelnuts, white flowers, and toasted almonds with a long mineral finish. Corton Perrières is the most structured red, requiring 8–10 years to show its best.
