Domaine Ramonet

Domaine Ramonet is the defining address for Chassagne-Montrachet, built by Pierre Ramonet who arrived in Burgundy with modest means in the late 1920s and assembled one of the Côte de Beaune's greatest vineyard collections through decades of patient acquisition. The pivotal moment came in 1978 when Pierre paid cash for a quarter-hectare of Montrachet — today 0.2 hectares — a purchase that crystallised the domaine's reputation as a Grand Cru powerhouse. Pierre's grandson André ran the estate until 2011, when brothers Noël and Jean-Claude took over, having participated in production for many years. The 17-hectare estate now spans Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Saint-Aubin, with Grand Cru holdings in Montrachet (0.2 ha), Bâtard-Montrachet (0.6 ha), Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet (0.4 ha), and Chevalier-Montrachet (0.1 ha). Despite its white wine fame, Ramonet also produces excellent red Chassagne-Montrachet from old Pinot Noir. At auction, the Montrachet commands $3,000–$7,000 per bottle, while Bâtard-Montrachet is among Burgundy's best-value Grand Crus.

Pierre Ramonet paid cash in 1978 for a quarter-hectare of Montrachet — a purchase that established the domaine's Grand Cru credentials; today 0.2 hectares produce fewer than 600 bottles of Montrachet annually.
The estate holds four Grand Cru parcels in the Puligny-Chassagne corridor: Montrachet (0.2 ha), Bâtard-Montrachet (0.6 ha), Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet (0.4 ha), and Chevalier-Montrachet (0.1 ha) — a collection assembled across five decades.
Pierre Ramonet's 1934 Chassagne-Montrachet Ruchottes attracted American importer Frank Schoonmaker, who introduced Ramonet to the US market before the Second World War — making it one of the earliest Burgundy producers to build an international reputation.
Brothers Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet have led the estate since 2011 following André's passing; the continuation of a hands-on, terroir-first approach has sustained the domaine's critical standing across four generations.

In the Glass

Ramonet whites are among the richest and most full-bodied expressions of Chassagne and Puligny terroir — golden-hued, with pronounced hazelnut, butter, and stone-fruit richness underpinned by firm acidity and a mineral saline finish. Montrachet achieves an almost overwhelming complexity of honey, spice, and toasted almonds. Bâtard is rounder and more accessible; Bienvenues lighter and more floral; the reds from Chassagne show an earthy, savoury elegance.
