Domenico Clerico

Domenico Clerico was one of Barolo's most influential modernist producers, based in Monforte d'Alba, who began producing wine in 1979 and became a leading figure in the Barolo Wars — the generational conflict between traditional and modern winemaking approaches in the Langhe. Clerico embraced French barrique ageing, shorter macerations, and single-vineyard production, producing wines of greater accessibility in youth but retaining Barolo's fundamental character. The flagship Pajana (from the Pajana vineyard in Ginestra, Monforte d'Alba) and Percristina (from the Mosconi vineyard) are the estate's grands vins. Ciabot Mentin is sourced from the Ginestra cru. Across 406 auction lots, the estate averages $112 per bottle with prices reaching $1,792. Clerico passed away in 2017 at age 64; the estate is now managed by his wife and team. Top vintages including 2010, 2013, and 2016 have earned scores of 94–97 from Wine Advocate. The Percristina, produced in quantities of fewer than 500 cases, is the most scarce and prized offering.

Domenico Clerico was a founding figure of the Barolo modernist movement in the 1980s, adopting French barriques and shorter macerations in direct opposition to the traditional Slavonian botti approach.
Pajana, sourced from the Ginestra vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, is one of Barolo's benchmark single-vineyard crus; Clerico's version consistently earns 94–96 points and exemplifies the modernist style at its finest.
Percristina, the estate's prestige cuvée from the Mosconi vineyard, is produced in fewer than 500 cases and has earned scores up to 97 points; it trades at $200–400 per bottle in current auction cycles.
406 auction lots average $112 per bottle, with a ceiling of $1,792 for large-format and older Percristina lots — Clerico's auction pricing reflecting his significant but not cult-level international following.

In the Glass

Clerico Barolos are modernist Monforte d'Alba: dark cherry, plum, dark chocolate, cedar, and vanilla from barrique influence alongside Nebbiolo's classic rose and tar. Pajana is the most accessible, with plush tannins and generous fruit. Percristina is more concentrated and complex — deeper structure, more minerality, and greater ageing potential. Ciabot Mentin is the most traditional-leaning in style. All wines are full-bodied, approachable at 8–10 years but capable of 20+ years evolution in top vintages.
