Dominus Estate

Dominus Estate is the Napa Valley project of Christian Moueix, the Pomerol négoce patriarch who oversees Château Pétrus and Château Trotanoy. Established in 1982 from Napanook Vineyard — one of Napa's oldest continuously farmed sites, with origins in 1946 — the estate was designed as a European-informed counterpoint to the prevailing Napa style of the 1980s. The 316-lot auction record attributed to Dominus Estate at $338 average per bottle represents the Othello second wine, not the Dominus grand vin, which trades at significantly higher prices in separate listings. Othello nonetheless is a serious wine drawing from younger-vine Napanook material and Moueix's Bordeaux-schooled winemaking. At $338, even the second wine commands premium pricing that reflects the Moueix name and the Napanook site's historical pedigree. The 1994 vintage represents Othello's top auction record, corresponding to one of Napa's most celebrated decades. The Napanook Vineyard's deep alluvial soils and the cooling maritime influence of the Yountville appellation produce a more restrained Cabernet than the Oakville or Rutherford benchlands, an intentional departure from the opulent Napa mainstream.
