Elvio Cogno
Elvio Cogno is a family estate in Novello in the southwestern Barolo zone, established in 1990 when Elvio Cogno departed Marcarini to found his own winery. Today run by daughter Nadia Cogno and son-in-law Walter Fissore across approximately 8 hectares, the estate's identity is anchored by the Ravera MGA — one of Barolo's most sought-after single crus. The Ravera in Novello grows on Helvetian soils rich in calcareous marl, producing wines of greater finesse and mineral tension than the iron-heavy soils of Serralunga. Cogno's range encompasses Cascina Nuova (entry-level Barolo), Ravera (cru expression), Bricco Pernice (single-vineyard micro-selection, produced only in exceptional years), and Elena Riserva (released after minimum five years aging). Technique is traditional: long maceration, large Slavonian oak casks. The Ravera has earned consistent 93–96 point scores from major critics since the early 2010s, and Bricco Pernice from benchmark years such as 2010 and 2016 represents the estate's auction ceiling. With 238 lots averaging $102 per bottle and peaks to $478, Cogno occupies the compelling middle tier of the Barolo secondary market — a top-cru producer priced well below Giacomo Conterno or Bartolo Mascarello but delivering comparable terroir specificity.

In the Glass
Elvio Cogno's Barolos express the Ravera MGA's character: dried rose petal, tar, licorice, and dark cherry on a frame of firm, drying tannin. Calcareous Novello soils deliver mineral sharpness and finesse. Bricco Pernice adds greater concentration and structure; Elena Riserva develops tobacco, dried herbs, and leather with extended cellaring. The overarching style is traditional and built for long aging.
