Fait-Main

Havens Wine Cellars was a small Napa Valley winery founded by Michael Havens in the late 1980s, specializing in Merlot and Rhône varieties at a time when both were underexplored by Napa's Cabernet-centric establishment. The winery built a following with its Bourriquot Syrah blend and Hudson Vineyard Syrah before Michael Havens retired and sold the label to subsequent ownership. Hudson Vineyard in Carneros — shared with Kistler, Kongsgaard, and other acclaimed producers — is one of California's most celebrated multi-producer sites for Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Havens' Reserve Merlot was produced from premium Napa sources and positioned as a Pomerol-influenced alternative at a time when Napa Merlot was more commonly treated as an accessible varietal rather than a collectible category. At auction, 112 lots average just $46 per bottle — the lowest average in this dataset — reflecting the label's discontinued status and the modest collectibility of the wines relative to more famous Napa Merlot producers. The Hudson Syrah is the most interesting lot from a terroir perspective, occasionally reaching $60–$80 for late 1990s vintages when it earned strong scores from Robert Parker. The Bourriquot blend was among the first commercial expressions of Syrah-based blending in Napa Valley, preceding the broader California Rhône Rangers movement's commercial traction.

Fait-Main sources from Beckstoffer Las Piedras in St. Helena — one of the Beckstoffer family's most esteemed non-To Kalon holdings — on ancient alluvial fan soils where volcanic rock near the surface concentrates fruit and intensifies structure.
Beckstoffer vineyard contracts require purchasing wineries to demonstrate quality commitment through pricing minimums, winemaking specifications, and occasionally long-term contracts — making access to Beckstoffer fruit a genuine signal of producer seriousness.
Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville, Fait-Main's other key source, sits adjacent to Dominus Estate and has supplied fruit to several acclaimed small Napa producers for its combination of deep alluvial soils and the Yountville AVA's cooler microclimate.
Production per vineyard designation is typically 200–500 cases, positioning Fait-Main as a true artisan producer whose secondary-market pricing of $104 average significantly undervalues the source vineyard credentials relative to better-known names drawing from the same sites.

In the Glass

Single-vineyard Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena and Yountville benchland: cassis, dark plum, graphite, and cedar with the structural precision of small-lot winemaking. Las Piedras adds volcanic mineral tension and firm tannins; Sleeping Lady's Yountville origin contributes cooler-climate acidity and aromatic lift. Whole-cluster inclusion adds spice and stem complexity. French oak is prominent in youth but integrates with 5–10 years. Full-bodied and built for medium-term aging.
