Fontanafredda

Fontanafredda is one of the most historically significant estates in Piedmont, founded in 1858 by King Vittorio Emanuele II on a royal hunting estate in Serralunga d'Alba. The property spans 120 hectares of vines in some of Barolo's most prized positions, including the Comune di Serralunga d'Alba — known for its compact Helvetian soils that produce the longest-lived, most tannic Barolos. The estate passed through several ownership phases before being acquired in 2008 by the Oscar Farinetti-led group that also owns Eataly, which prompted a significant modernisation of viniculture and winemaking. Fontanafredda produces a broad portfolio ranging from entry-level Barolo to the prestige La Rosa single-vineyard cru. Barolo Comune di Serralunga d'Alba represents the estate's quality benchmark at auction. Across 500 lots, the estate averages $112 per bottle with prices reaching $492. The 2010 and 2013 vintages from Serralunga are particularly prized. Fontanafredda also produces solid Barbaresco and a range of other Piedmontese varieties. Its scale and heritage make it a consistent auction presence.

Founded by King Vittorio Emanuele II in 1858 on a royal estate in Serralunga d'Alba, Fontanafredda is one of Piedmont's oldest continuously operating wine estates.
The estate controls 120 hectares in Serralunga d'Alba, one of Barolo's most compact and mineral communes, whose Helvetian soils yield wines of exceptional tannic structure and longevity.
Barolo Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, the estate's benchmark cru wine, averages around $130 per bottle at auction and scores consistently in the 90–93 range from major critics.
The Oscar Farinetti acquisition in 2008 — the same entrepreneur behind the Eataly food emporiums — brought significant investment in organic farming and single-vineyard focus.

In the Glass

Fontanafredda Barolos from Serralunga d'Alba are among the most structured in the appellation: dried rose, tar, leather, and red cherry with firm, grippy tannins and bright acidity. The Helvetian compact soils impart a mineral austerity that sets Serralunga apart from the more plush Barolos of La Morra. Barbaresco offerings show more floral delicacy. Wines need 10–15 years to reach their peak, with top vintages capable of 30+ years in bottle.
