Giacomo Fenocchio

Giacomo Fenocchio is a traditional Barolo producer based in Bussia, Monforte d'Alba, with roots in the Langhe going back to the 19th century. Claudio Fenocchio maintains a strictly traditional approach: long macerations of 30-45 days, aging in large Slavonian oak botti for three to four years, no fining or filtration. The estate farms four important Barolo MGA sites — Bussia, Villero (in Castiglione Falletto), Cannubi (in Barolo), and the 90 di Riserva selection from Bussia. At auction, 136 lots have traded at an average of $62, ranging from $30 to $319. Bussia leads at 30 lots averaging $50; Villero averages $63 across 22 lots; Cannubi averages $48 across 20 lots. Wine Advocate has scored Fenocchio's top cuvees in the 93-96 range. The $319 ceiling almost certainly reflects 90 di Riserva or large-format Bussia or Villero from benchmark vintages including 1989, 1990, 2010, and 2016.

Fenocchio's 90 di Riserva — a special selection from Bussia aged beyond the already long standard elevage — is bottled only in exceptional years and represents the estate's rarest and most sought-after wine.
The estate farms four Barolo MGAs across two communes: Villero (Castiglione Falletto) averages $63 vs. Bussia (Monforte) at $50, providing direct inter-commune comparison.
30-45 day macerations and 3-4 years in large Slavonian oak botti produce wines requiring 15+ years to approach primary readiness; Wine Advocate scores typically 93-96 for top cuvees.
136 lots average $62 — significantly below the Barolo appellation average for equivalent critical scores — making Fenocchio one of the most undervalued traditional estates at auction.

In the Glass

Traditional multi-commune Barolo: Bussia shows concentrated dark cherry, tar, and iron mineral; Villero (Castiglione Falletto) delivers more aromatic complexity and floral lift from its Tortonian soils; Cannubi offers silkier, more elegant Nebbiolo with fine tannins. All bottlings share the house signatures of high acidity, substantial tannic structure, dried rose, leather, and tobacco — wines built uncompromisingly for multi-decade aging.
