Gianni Brunelli
Gianni Brunelli was a charismatic Montalcino figure who ran the La Muciante estate and Le Chiuse di Sotto winery while also operating the Zì Rosa restaurant in Montalcino town. His Brunello di Montalcino gained significant critical recognition in the 2000s for its traditional approach — large Slavonian oak casks, extended aging, no use of small French barriques — producing wines of classic structure and longevity. Brunelli passed away in 2008, and the estate was continued by his wife Laura Brunelli and is now managed by the family. The production covers approximately 9 hectares. At auction, prices range from $25 to $189, with an average of $81 across 121 lots. The standard Brunello and a Riserva (only in exceptional years) form the portfolio. Despite Brunelli's death, the estate has maintained quality and the wines continue to attract collector interest for their traditional character.

In the Glass
Gianni Brunelli Brunello is classically structured Sangiovese: dried cherry, leather, iron, dried herbs, and licorice, built on firm tannins and high acidity from large-cask aging that preserves the natural fruit character. The style demands 10–15 years of patience but develops extraordinary tobacco, dried rose, and tertiary complexity. The Riserva is denser and longer-lived.
