Hubert Lignier

Hubert Lignier was one of the Cote de Nuits' most admired domaines in the 1980s and 1990s, producing Morey-Saint-Denis and surrounding appellation wines with exceptional purity and depth. Hubert himself was considered among the elite small-domaine vignerons of his generation, known for minimal intervention, careful sorting, and wines of real longevity. The domaine centers on Morey-Saint-Denis with holdings extending into Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, and Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. After Hubert's passing in 2004, his son Roman and daughter-in-law Kellen took over operations, with Roman initially drawing controversy before settling into the role. The estate's apex wines — Griotte-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot — are the primary drivers of its $956 auction maximum. Across 262 lots averaging $173 per bottle, the domaine commands respect across the portfolio: even the Vieilles Vignes Bourgogne trades well given the age of vines contributing. The Trilogie blend and village-level Chambolle and Gevrey bottlings average well below $100, providing entry points, while grand crus justify four-figure per-bottle pricing in exceptional years. Hubert-era bottles from the late 1980s and 1990s are particularly sought after, with 1990, 1993, and 1996 considered landmark vintages for the domaine. The arrival of Roman Lignier also coincided with a reassessment of élevage and new oak percentages, resulting in wines since 2010 that recapture much of Hubert's precise, energetic style with consistent critical recognition in the 90–95-point range.

Hubert Lignier's late 1980s and 1990s vintages — particularly 1990, 1993, and 1996 — are considered benchmark Cote de Nuits bottlings and command significant premiums over current releases at auction.
The domaine holds grand cru parcels in both Griotte-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot, with auction prices for these wines reaching $956 per bottle, representing more than 5x the domaine average.
After Hubert Lignier's death in 2004, son Roman took over and the domaine underwent a period of stylistic adjustment; wines from the mid-2000s are considered less consistent than the Hubert era, a distinction that affects secondary market pricing.
The Vieilles Vignes Bourgogne Rouge, sourced from old vines declassified from premier cru-adjacent parcels, consistently outperforms generic Bourgogne comparables at auction due to vineyard quality and the Lignier name.

In the Glass

Hubert Lignier's house style is defined by aromatic purity: fresh red and black cherry, wild strawberry, violet, and earth with minimal new oak influence. Village wines show floral, transparent Pinot Noir character; premier crus add mushroom, game, and forest floor complexity; Griotte-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot deliver spice, dark fruit, and mineral depth. Textures are silky with moderate tannin. Ages gracefully over 15–25 years.
