Ken Brown

Ken Brown is a Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer with roots extending to his tenure as founding winemaker of Zaca Mesa (where he helped establish the winery in the 1970s) and later as winemaker at Byron (now The Nielson by Byron) before founding his own label in 2001. Brown's career represents some of the formative history of Santa Barbara County wine, and his namesake label focuses on single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley. At auction, the estate averages $52 per bottle across 101 lots, with Radian Vineyard Pinot Noir ($60), the standard Pinot Noir ($53), and Cargasacchi Vineyard ($40) as the primary auction wines. Radian Vineyard sits at the windiest, coldest end of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, where the Lompoc Valley wind gap creates extreme diurnal temperature variation and produces some of the appellation's most structured wines. Cargasacchi, a historic site in Sta. Rita Hills, averages lower at $40 — possibly reflecting smaller lot sizes or less collector awareness. The 2015 vintage appears most frequently as a reference point.

Ken Brown was the founding winemaker at Zaca Mesa in the 1970s, one of the first Santa Barbara County wineries to produce Pinot Noir, and later winemaker at Byron — making him one of the appellation's earliest and most influential figures.
Radian Vineyard, the estate's top auction wine at $60 average, sits at the western extreme of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA near the Lompoc Valley wind gap — among California's most extreme Pinot Noir growing conditions.
Cargasacchi Vineyard, a historic Sta. Rita Hills site with old-vine Pinot Noir, averages $40 at auction for Ken Brown — slightly below Radian despite the vineyard's critical prestige.
The 2015 vintage appears as the primary reference across multiple Ken Brown Pinot Noir cuvées — a year of outstanding acid and structure across Sta. Rita Hills despite California's broader drought conditions.

In the Glass

Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir from one of California's coolest Pinot addresses: Radian shows intense cranberry, blood orange, and iron-mineral intensity with bright acidity and firm tannins from extreme wind exposure. Cargasacchi is slightly more generous with strawberry and spice. Ken Brown's winemaking emphasizes site transparency over oak imprint — moderate new oak, low alcohol, and vineyard-driven character. The wines reward 3–10 years of cellaring.
